With over 25 years of experience in the television and film industry, Carston is a recognized expert in RF transmission technology and specialty camera solutions. His role will be pivotal in introducing EMG / Gravity Media’s globally recognized special camera technologies to the U.S. market, driving innovation and collaboration across our group entities, including Connectivity and ACS.

As Specialist Systems Manager, Carston will oversee the development, deployment, and management of special camera and RF projects. His expertise will support the seamless integration of cutting-edge broadcast solutions, enabling EMG / Gravity Media to excel in high-profile live sports, entertainment, and aerospace productions.

Carston’s journey into broadcast technology began with a NASA-inspired childhood and has spanned decades of creative and technical contributions. Having freelanced with EMG Connectivity USA in recent years, he has developed a strong connection with the company and its leadership team. His relationship with Nathan Spencer, Managing Director of EMG / Gravity Media USA, dates back more than a decade, further solidifying his integration into the team.

Prior to joining EMG / Gravity Media, Carston has extensive experience in aerial cinematography, RF technology, and specialist cameras for live events, documentaries, and aerospace productions. He holds a pilot’s license and possesses in-depth knowledge of aviation and aerospace.

With a deep expertise in RF technology, specialist cameras, and wireless solutions, including pylons for football and in-car cameras, Carston has played a pivotal role in and delivered major contributions for iconic events including Red Bull’s Stratos skydive and Luke Aikens’ “Heaven Sent” freefall, the remote camera operations for the Super Bowl, as well as NASA and SpaceX aerospace tests to name a few. Plus, the winner of multiple Emmy awards and a Primetime Emmy nominee.

Grass Valley’s K-Frame XP mainframe delivers advanced processing capabilities, powering a 4ME Kahuna panel for seamless integration of switching and effects.

State-of-the-art Sony cameras paired with Canon UHD lenses ensure unparalleled visual quality. EVS VIA provides orchestration that streamlines the live sports broadcast environment, bringing together media ingest, production, asset management, and playout into a cohesive workflow. Seamlessly integrated with a fully redundant 10Gbps network, to ensure high-speed connectivity with built-in redundancy which prevents downtime or data loss, for reliable infrastructure and swift file management.

The booth setup is equipped with Sennheiser RF microphones for optimal audio performance and dynamic range. A Panasonic UE150 robotic camera, facilitates advanced capture with remote PTZ, high-resolution imaging, and integration control, for flexibility in framing the action. Glensound commentary units have been specified for impeccable sound quality, and a comprehensive gallery setup used on NBC Sports’ golf events will be shipped to South America ensuring operational efficiency on-site.

Josh Rosen has been appointed as the Vice President of Production & Content. Nathan Spencer has been appointed as Vice President of Media Services & Facilities. This will see the coming together of EMG’s Connectivity business with Gravity Media’s OB business under Nathan’s leadership in Nashville. Nathan has done an outstanding job of establishing EMG Connectivity in the US market, quickly building rapport with clients, and driving new business as a result. Nathan’s extensive experience in facilities more broadly sets him up well to take over leadership of Gravity Media’s legacy truck business in the US market. Nathan will work closely with Peter Newton, Director of Media Services & Facilities to deliver on the combined business’ US objectives.

Laura Diaz has been promoted to Head of Finance in the US. Laura has been with the legacy Gravity Media business for eight years. Laura holds an intimate knowledge of all US clients across Media Services & Facilities as well as Production and Content.

Maria Sebastian will oversee HR for the group in the USA. Maria brings valuable experience having previously been Senior HR Generalist at Gravity Media. Maria has extensive experience working with all 50 states in the US as well as helping international teams work in the US.

Each of these individuals brings a wealth of experience, expertise, and fresh perspectives to the team, ensuring the continued success of the combined Group. Their contributions will play a crucial role in achieving collective goals and driving the business forward.

The extended partnership will see Gravity Media provide a Managed Services solution at Riot Games’ brand new state-of-the-art Remote Broadcast Centre (RBC) Powered by AWS in the greater Seattle, Washington area set to open later this year.

At the beginning of 2023, Gravity Media announced its initial partnership with Riot Games, further bolstering its esports credentials where over the last ten months, the Gravity Media team has successfully delivered a Managed Services solution at Riot’s RBC in Dublin, Ireland. During this time, Gravity Media has successfully placed 40 talented individuals from Broadcast Engineering, TOC, EVS, Audio GFX and Media Asset Management.

Working in partnership with Riot Games, Gravity Media will recruit a dedicated team of more than 30 broadcast specialists across EVS, Engineering, Audio and Media Asset Management to the Seattle area RBC to contribute to Riot’s production of best-in-class live esports events for global audiences.

The 70,000-square foot production space located 16 miles south of Seattle is Riot’s second RBC strategically placed around the globe to support regional and global live esports events. The 2023 VALORANT Game Changers Championship taking place 28 November through 3 December from Riot’s esports studio in São Paulo, Brazil will be the first live global esports event supported by the Seattle area RBC.

Riot Games was founded in 2006 to develop, publish and support the most player-focused games in the world. In 2009, Riot released its debut title, League of Legends, to worldwide acclaim. League has gone on to be the most-played PC game globally and a key driver of the explosive growth of esports.

First launched under the codename “Project Stryker” in July 2022, Riot’s Remote Broadcast Centers represent an efficient new approach to live global production where broadcast feeds from live esports competitions happening around the world can be sent to the RBCs where content is produced, broadcast, and distributed in multiple languages to esports fans. The Seattle area Remote Broadcast Centre is equipped with a TOC, three remote casting insert stages, six production control rooms (PCRs), six audio control rooms (ACRs), multiple bullpens for observers (in-game camera operators), graphics, replay and editing.

The facility also features impressive global connectivity at 200 Gbps and over 40km of cabling carrying live event feeds to the production facility in about 1/10th of a second. Courtesy of Riot’s partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS), six control rooms are outfitted with future-forward technology and cloud-based zero client computing enabling Riot to efficiently produce events even more virtually and remotely than before.

The RBC provides a great opportunity to attract the very best talent to join the future of esports based in Seattle. As part of the growing continued partnership Gravity Media will ensure remote production and engineering specialist talent work collaboratively to install and integrate the permanent studio facilities and production workflows as part of the growing facility.

Getting everything rigged and ready for the first day’s play required a full Gravity Media crew of over 150 skillful individuals arriving on site in early August, installing and testing the core Host Broadcast Facilities, whilst working closely with an abundance of vendors to ensure successful delivery of the tournament. On site at peak periods, Gravity Media deployed over 70 talented technical crew members plus an additional 81 expert production and technical crew to facilitate coverage.

Across the tournament, Gravity Media is responsible for providing extensive coverage of the entire US Open Tennis Championship, ensuring fans won’t miss a moment of the action, from the exciting early-round matches to the thrilling finals. Gravity Media’s dedication to providing comprehensive coverage and top-notch analysis of this iconic tournament remains unwavering.

Gravity Media has successfully facilitated the Host, Domestic and International production facilities as well as the unilateral facilities.

The technical set up on site involved the Gravity Media team setting up five Production Control rooms for the host linear courts production with four associated Audio Control rooms, one PCR & ACR for Domestic Production, one multi-transmission control room for international, 14 ViBox Production Desks for outer court production and two associated Audio Control Rooms. In addition to this, the team deployed a full EVS VIA server and infrastructure, with over 30 Servers, 15+ XTAs and 20+ IP Directors as well as three online Avid Symphony Edits,  seven “Lite” Media Composers Edits and 2 After Effects stations plus three voice-over booths and three announce booths. All in all over 170 cameras across Gravity clients.

Embracing the latest technological advancements, this year’s broadcast of the US Open Tennis Championship featured state-of-the-art technical innovations that elevated the viewer experience to new heights including Ashe produced in UHD with Dolby Atmos and full EVS Via Server rollout and associated upgrade to XHub Via and Xsquare VIA Suite of tools.

The coverage from the 2023 US Open Tennis Championship is poised to set new standards in sports entertainment as Gravity Media’s specialist cameras were also in use. Introducing a range of cutting-edge technological innovations, promising an even more immersive and engaging experience for viewers, the team deployed NetCams across three course, three “Towel Cams” – mini PTZ cameras on Ashe, 11 MRMC AFC 100’s, 32 “Special Cams” around the grounds and on the courts, RF Gimbal Cameras and 10 RF Cameras capturing site wide coverage.

Gravity Media, the global provider of complex live creative production and media services, is thrilled to announce a new partnership with NBC Sports to support their coverage of Big Ten football and basketball.

Gravity Media’s newest mobile unit, Aspen, will be deployed on the assignment along with flagship mobile unit, Columbus. Another new S-Class with the same specifications as Aspen is in progress. It will join the fleet to support NBC Sports’ coverage from 2024.

The assignment begins with the start of this year’s College Football season with a game at The Big House, Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor.

NBC Sports announced its Big Ten schedule for the first three weeks of the 2023 football season last month as well as select games later in the season. Last year, NBC Universal and the Big Ten Conference announced a landmark 7-year agreement for NBC and Peacock to become the exclusive home of Big Ten Saturday Night football, beginning in 2023. Peacock will also serve as the exclusive home for eight additional Big Ten football games each season as well as dozens of college basketball games.

Over the course of the agreement, Gravity Media, and NBC Sports engineers in concert with NBC Sports’ EMMY Award-winning producers and directors will employ innovative tactics from traditional Full-Production on site to Remote-Connected techniques at NBC Sports’ state-of-the-art facility in Stamford, Conn.  The production techniques were designed and perfected by NBC Sports’ and Gravity Media’s Broadcast Engineers in test case college events last season.

Andres has been in the Las Vegas market for over 20 years and his experience spans UFC, KLAS TV, KBLR Telemundo, KMCC 34, KYVV San Antonio, MundoFOX/MAX and KBLR Telemundo. Andres holds strong creativity, the proven ability to work independently as well as being a strong team player and leader.

Andres joins from Klas TV where he was the Senior Newscast Director / Supervisor at Klas TV in Las Vegas. There he was responsible for leading and supervising The Morning team; writing, editing, as well as tracking Spanish short news stories on 8News Now. Andres also worked with the UFC where he was the Spanish Broadcast Director.

Prior to this, Andres worked as a News Operators Manager at KBLR Telemundo, where he led, developed, and coordinated electronic and digital newsgathering operations for video gathering, editing, remote broadcasts, LiveU, Dejero and the Dejero APP. In addition, Andres was accountable for the production control rooms, studio technology and vehicle fleet as well as providing technical guidance, training and leadership for editorial and newsgathering personnel, including photographers or others as assigned.

Experienced RF Specialist to Lead EMG Connectivity in North America

We are happy to announce the appointment of accomplished industry executive Nathan Spencer as CEO of EMG Connectivity in the USA. Nathan will lead the expansion and strategy of EMG’s RF and wireless camera execution in the North American market, develop its roadmap, and be responsible for recruiting a world-class delivery team in the US.

He will have a particular focus on the further development and market penetration of RF, 5G, and other connectivity services in which EMG specializes. EMG Connectivity is the business unit into which all of EMG’s RF Services & Connectivity have recently been consolidated. Nathan will be based at EMG’s American HQ at the Trilith Studios near Atlanta, GA.

Nathan Spencer, EMG Connectivity USA said: “I’m excited to be joining an established market leader like EMG. Nathan began his broadcast career in the UK in 1992 where he specialized in RF productions and has been active in the United States for many years where he has made a name for himself in both the movie and television industries. More recently, Nathan worked as a Remote Operations Manager involved in business development as well as field support and as EIC for major events across North America like the NFL, College Football, MLS, Super Bowl, Triathlons, Marathons and Cycle Races. Nathan is a member of the International Cinematographers Guild in Los Angeles and has worked on many Hollywood movies such as ‘The Avengers’, ‘Inception’, ‘Mission Impossible 4’ and ‘The Bourne Legacy’”
