The Sports Technology Awards, which was started in 2014, evolve each year to reflect the important factors influencing every facet of sports. This year, Gravity Media and Sky are thrilled to have been shortlisted for an award in the “Best Use of Technology by a Broadcaster” category for the use of Gravity Media’s specialist camera HelmetCam during the summer cricket series The Hundred.
In 2021, Gravity Media debuted its new HelmetCam, developed by Globecam™ specialist cameras unit, across grounds in England and Wales during the worldwide feed coverage of The Hundred (Sky Sports & BBC).
The Hundred, cricket’s newest short-form tournament, was created to throw open cricket’s doors to all and show off the game at its thrilling best – so it’s no surprise that digital innovation had to sit at the heart. In partnership with the ECB, Sky Sports’ brief was to explore new ways to deliver innovative broadcast and fan engagement experiences aimed at younger demographics and audiences that were new to the game.
Renowned for creating ground-breaking, high-definition digital miniature live broadcast devices, Gravity Media’s Globecam™ HelmetCam was the perfect solution to capture even more exciting angles and perspectives for the viewers.
Making its UK production launch on Sky Sports Cricket’s The Hundred coverage, HelmetCam delivers a unique HD broadcasting solution, letting audiences at home experience exactly what the batter, fielder, umpire, or wicketkeeper sees during the game. It places the viewer at home at the very centre of all the action and drama, delivering a unique viewing perspective throughout the game. Taking you from the sofa at home to the very centre of all the on-field drama by providing ground-breaking viewing angles across live and replayed pictures.
The device has full HD 1080i/50 resolution, HD-SDI output from the receiver, image stabilisation and is light-weight at only 230g in total.
Greg Littrich, Director of Media Services & Facilities for Gravity Media in Australia commented: “Gravity Media and the Globecam™ team are proud of our long-standing relationship with Sky Sports, in bringing innovative technology to sports broadcasting and the Globecam™ HelmetCam is a great demonstration of this. The Hundred provided the perfect platform for the UK debut of Helmetcam and the unique perspective it gave to the viewers at home brought benefit to the overall production. We look forward to continuing to develop new and innovative technology for sports broadcasting.”
We look forward to the awards ceremony on Thursday 12 May in London.
