OUR CUSTOMER
NBL Australia is the country’s premier professional men’s basketball league. Every season, competing teams – including one from New Zealand – battle it out at different match locations across the nation, including the more remote cities, like Cairns.
When Gravity Media – then branded Gearhouse Broadcast – was brought in to facilitate production of the league’s television product, NBL Live, the challenge was to come up with a bespoke Outside Broadcast (OB) solution that would be less costly to transport across long distances without any compromise made on the quality of the production kit.
OUR APPROACH
Experts in handling complex production needs and renowned for providing innovative broadcast solutions for live televised events, Gravity Media provided NBL Live with a comprehensive service. A skilled team of specialists from the Australian division was put together to devise a bespoke OB solution that would allow producers to deliver a high-quality product to viewers, whilst saving on transportation costs.
The specially tailored Flyaway kit subsequently designed and built by the Gravity Media team neatly solved the distinct logistical problem associated with moving kit across vast distances between match locations. The team worked in close consultation with NBL Live every step of the way to ensure the show’s specific broadcast requirements were met.
With a clear vision of the deliverables, the Gravity Media team examined every production requirement, using its existing relationships with technology manufacturers to fully customise the Flyaway kit. Ease of transport of the kit was enabled by its compact nature. This allowed it to remain in road cases, with front and rear panels removed for operation connectivity and use. This created an efficient facility able to be transported via a standard 8 tonne truck with a tail lifter.
Match coverage cameras, commentary positions, hosting positions, interviews courtside and ‘flash’ positions were all comfortably facilitated by the purpose-built Fly Away. Able to be deployed with minimum engineering crew, the entire venue de-rig, pack-down and loading (onto the 8 ton truck) was in line time-wise with a conventional OB Unit.
