Gravity Media, a global leader in production and content and media services and facilities, delivered the Australian Open 2026 with a bespoke international broadcast centre and large-scale IP production environment. Together, this formed the technical backbone for Tennis Australia’s creative, editorial and operational delivery of the tournament to audiences worldwide.

The 2026 tournament marked the 12th year of the broadcast and technology partnership between Gravity Media and Tennis Australia, and the 22nd year Gravity Media provided host broadcast technical facilities for the Australian Open.

A dedicated team of 75 specialists from Australia, the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany designed, deployed, and operated the Melbourne Park broadcast centre, managing over 100 tonnes of fly-away infrastructure and more than 150 broadcast cameras across the precinct.

Across Melbourne Park, 172 camera sources captured every match and surrounding activity, including:

An extensive RF and communications network supported seamless operations throughout the site, with 48 Bolero antenna positions enabling 150 belt packs for presenters, production staff, and rightsholders.

The production galleries and audio control rooms were housed at Tennis Australia’s headquarters and was connected via 500 metres of fibre and dual 700-gig data links to the central equipment room at the broadcast compound.

The facilities comprised 10 production galleries, nine audio control rooms, and 11 ViBox systems covering the outside courts. In total, the environment supported over 130 operating positions and more than 150 multiviewers displaying approximately 1,700 picture-in-picture sources.

Signal routing was managed through a large-scale IP and baseband system providing a 4,000 x 4,000 routing environment, while over 2,500 audio signals were handled through a hybrid Audio Live and Calrec solution. This fully IP-based architecture enabled the integration of live match coverage, highlights production, and digital content workflows.

Across the 15-day tournament, Gravity Media delivered more than 200 hours of coverage to international and domestic rights holders, including Nine Network in Australia, ESPN, Eurosport, CCTV, and WOWOW.

As part of the 2026 deployment, Gravity Media refreshed the technical furniture across the production facilities, replacing workstations that had been in service for more than a decade while maintaining the established layouts developed with Tennis Australia.

In the lead-up to the Australian Open, Gravity Media delivered broadcast and technical facilities for the United Cup in Perth and Sydney, as well as the Brisbane International and Adelaide International.

For the United Cup, Gravity Media provided outside broadcast production trucks and facilities in each city, accessing 28 cameras, multiple EVS replay and edit suites and Livetools equipment for use by teams and players. Additional bespoke fly-away production systems were implemented in Sydney so that Tennis Australia could integrate coverage from multiple cities into a fully produced “world feed” for delivery across international broadcast and subscription platforms.

The Adelaide International and Brisbane International were supported with state-of-the-art high-definition outside broadcast trucks, using 22 cameras across each site to deliver bespoke coverage for Tennis Australia and its domestic and international broadcast partners.

In addition to its role as host broadcast technical partner, Gravity Media continued to support international broadcast partners, including ESPN and Eurosport, with production and technology services for their Australian Open coverage.

Eamonn Curtin, Chief Commercial Officer of Gravity Media said:

“The Australian Open continues to be one of the most complex and rewarding productions in the world of live sport. A New Era in Tennis Production

EMG / Gravity Media and ATP Media have introduced a cutting-edge remote production workflow for ATP Media Studios, further enhancing its flexibility on delivering innovative broadcast solutions. This development follows the success EMG / Gravity Media had in Formula E, where the team implemented a similar system to reduce carbon emissions and logistical complexity.

At the heart of this transformation are two newly designed remote production pods, built to streamline operations for ATP Masters 1000 tournaments and the Nitto ATP Finals. The initiative reduces on-site personnel while maintaining the highest broadcast quality, aligning with the industry’s push towards more efficient and sustainable production models.

A Plug-and-Play Solution for ATP Masters 1000 and Nitto ATP Finals

The project took about a year to develop and was delivered in January, in time for the start of the ATP Tour season. The pods are compact and designed to fit within a Q6 pallet, making them highly transportable via both air and sea freight. The Q6 pallet has a tare weight of 120 kg (265 lb) and a volume of 17.0 m³ (600 ft³) with a height of 243.8 cm (96 in). Their transportable nature allows seamless deployment between venues: while one pod is in use, the other is en route to the next tournament, ensuring there is never a delay in delivery and setup.

The system provides a plug-and-play solution that integrates smoothly with ATP Media Studios’ existing engineering infrastructure, supporting world feed contribution and court feed distribution—the backbone of ATP Media’s broadcast operations. The pods significantly reduce the number of personnel required on-site while maintaining the same level of production quality expected from a world-class sports event.

Key features of the ATP Media Studios pods include:

This remote pod setup streamlines logistics and reduces costs, offering a more flexible and sustainable approach for ATP’s broadcasts.

Remote Production at WestWorks

The ATP Media Studios remote production model is fully integrated with WestWorks, EMG / Gravity Media’s state-of-the-art, 50,000-square-foot production facility in London. WestWorks serves as the central hub for live event feeds and supports both on-premise and distributed remote production workflows.

With up to 90 outgoing video and audio lines and over 160 feeds coming into ATP Media Studios for a single event, the system delivers unparalleled efficiency.

ATP Media Studios significantly reduces the reliance on on-site infrastructure while allowing a centralised production team to oversee multiple courts simultaneously.

Lessons from Formula E: Sustainable and Efficient Production

The ATP Media pods are an evolution of EMG / Gravity Media’s work in Formula E, where similar remote workflows drastically cut costs and environmental impact. In Formula E, EMG / Gravity Media deployed two transportable production pods that connected to the WestWorks facility, reducing on-site personnel by 58% and air freight by 40%.

In both ATP Media and Formula E, the key to success has been robust connectivity. Tata Communications supplies primary and backup fibre connections, ensuring the seamless encoding and decoding of signals using H.264, H.265 HEVC, JPEG XS, and NDI over RTP technologies.

The Future of Sports Broadcasting

The introduction of remote production pods for ATP Media Studios underscores EMG / Gravity Media’s leadership in transforming sports broadcasting through innovation. By integrating advanced remote workflows and leveraging the experience gained, they have created a model that enhances production quality while improving efficiency and sustainability.

As the sports industry continues to evolve, remote production solutions like these are set to redefine how live events are delivered, reducing logistical challenges while maximising efficiency and broadcast excellence. With ATP Media Studios now benefitting from this pioneering technology, the future of tennis broadcasting is more agile, cost-effective, and environmentally conscious than ever before.

EMG / Gravity Media, a world leading global provider of complex live creative production and media services, is proud to announce that it will deliver comprehensive, live coverage of the highly anticipated 2025 Billie Jean King Cup by Gainbridge Qualifiers from 10th – 12th April 2025 in Australia and The Netherlands.

Building on a long-term partnership having successfully delivered coverage for the Australian Open, United Cup, and Laver Cup, as part of the growing partnership with Tennis Australia, for the Qualifiers, EMG / Gravity Media will access internationally acknowledged camera and broadcast and production technologies designed and developed by EMG / Gravity Media.

In a significant logistics and production undertaking, at the Pat Rafter Arena in Australia, EMG / Gravity Media will deploy 11 cameras and state-of-the-art high definition outside broadcast truck technology coupled with cellular and cloud-based solutions.

Producing the international feed for ITF in Bologna

From 10 to 15 September, Bologna hosted the qualification round for the Davis Cup finals, where national tennis teams from around the world faced off. The Unipol Arena was the venue where Italy competed with the Netherlands, Brazil, and Belgium in Group A. EMG Italy’s goal was to ensure television coverage and produce the international feed while maintaining the high standards required for such a significant event in the global tennis calendar.

A high-level TV production

The event featured a large-scale television production, jointly managed by EMG Italy and the International Tennis Federation (ITF), the global governing body of tennis, including the Olympics. EMG Italy provided broadcast equipment, specialized personnel, and logistics for complete event coverage, while ITF augmented the production team with professionals who regularly follow the international tennis circuit. The mobile control room was managed through EMG’s Nova 150 truck, equipped to handle live 4K UHD HDR broadcasts. On this occasion, it operated in HD, serving as the operational hub with a crew of 35 and 12 main cameras, along with one specifically for press conferences.

Among the notable innovations for this year, camera 8 was mounted on a gimbal and connected via RF, capturing dynamic shots of player introductions and the lively Davis Cup audience. Cameras 10 and 11, two PTZ cameras, were positioned behind the players for replays and shots of their support teams, while two more cameras were dedicated to SuperMotion footage.

The production covered about nine hours of live broadcast daily, airing three matches (two singles and one doubles), alongside courtside interviews and final press conferences. Graphics and the Hawk-Eye system were provided by external partners and integrated into the central production.

A smooth workflow

Maurizio Nacher, COO of EMG Italy, stated:  “The challenge, as always in major travelling events, was maintaining a very high and uniform standard, comparable to other venues simultaneously hosting Davis Cup matches. Our international sister company, Gravity Media, specializes in tennis, and as EMG Italy, we are proud to support tennis events in Italy and internationally.”

Given the Davis Cup’s global scope, the visual and narrative quality of each match in every city needed to remain consistent. To this end, preparations began months in advance, with teams at the Unipol Arena working from 4 September to set up the technical infrastructure and fine-tune every detail before the first match. From lighting to audio, graphics, and slow-motion replays, everything was designed to provide viewers with an immersive and memorable experience.

Bologna, a tennis hub

Bologna became a central location as one of four cities (alongside Valencia, Zhuahi, and Manchester) where 16 teams competed for the world team championship title. The Davis Cup returned to Bologna in 2022 after more than 40 years, and the city has once again welcomed athletes, journalists, and fans from all over the world. The Davis Cup goes beyond sports results; it creates connections, fosters bonds, and leaves lasting memories for everyone involved.

EMG / Gravity Media, in collaboration with Tennis Australia, have successfully delivered cutting-edge coverage for the Laver Cup 2024 at Berlin’s Uber Arena. By leveraging their combined expertise, meticulous planning, and state-of-the-art technology, the teams provided an unmatched viewing experience for one of tennis’ most prestigious events.

At the heart of the production was the Nova 105 IP UHD HDR OB truck, a powerful tool supporting all aspects of the large-scale onsite production. As a proof of concept, the coverage was delivered in full 1080p HDR, showcasing impressive high dynamic range footage. For distribution, the outgoing feeds were converted to 1080p SDR, yet the quality remained exceptional – resulting in standard definition images that looked better than ever before, thanks to the original HDR capture.

Key to the success of the project was the detailed technical planning led by Lars Hilberink from the EMG / Gravity Media team based in the Netherlands. His extensive knowledge of IP video networks, HDR workflows, and colour grading were crucial in bringing this complex system to life. The production featured 49 cameras, including a sophisticated network of behind-the-scenes robotic and specialist cameras – such as the renowned net cameras, an extensive RF camera network, two full-size production galleries, multiple edit suites, as well as an onsite studio and commentary facilities.

This collaboration beautifully merged Gravity Media’s strong client relationships and experience with EMG’s technical expertise and flagship facilities. The project management team comprising Julia de Waal, Eric Pronk, and Georgy Tishin – seamlessly blended the strengths of the two newly merged teams, creating an efficient and highly productive working environment.

“I was impressed by all of our team’s professionalism and level of preparation,” said Georgy Tishin, Project and Account Manager for EMG / Gravity Media Australia.

Eric Pronk, Project Manager from EMG / Gravity Media Netherlands, added, “Our team truly enjoyed working on this incredible project. We are proud to have contributed and are excited for future collaborations, as we explore the combined strengths and resources of EMG and Gravity Media.”

This project has set a new standard for tennis broadcasting, demonstrating the benefits of HDR and paving the way for more innovative approaches in future productions.
