On Saturday 11 December, the team delivered the first of the MMA events organised in France! Held at the Marcel Cerdan arena located in Levallois-Perret, close to Paris, the team captured the ARES Fighting event.
Gravity Media supplied the crew, broadcast equipment, mobile broadcast production pods, 10 cameras, and a crane on site.
The Gravity Media team in France deployed the production for the premiere of ARES Fighting in France, an evening of fighting dedicated to MMA. With the legalisations of professional practice in France in early 2020, the excitement was at the rendezvous for a full house, delighted to attend this unprecedented gala evening. The spectators were able to enjoy a high standard event, broadcast live on RMC Sports, in the presence of men and women fighters, international references and with the honor of UFC fighters.
For the five-hour live event, the team deployed our mobile broadcast production pods on site, a 3-unit mobile control unit integrating MCR, audio, and production. Configured by our in-house network, video, sound, and HF experts, these units offer all the functionality of an outside broadcast van, in uniform and portable containers, suitable for HD outdoor broadcasting, with tailor-made fittings, air conditioning, and electrical distribution, operational within minutes of deployment.
The production of three separate and simultaneous feeds made it possible to produce dedicated programs, broadcast on several streaming platforms and international channels.
To make the production of this event a success, Gravity Media mobilised 24 people during this superb evening. To capture the matches, 10 cameras were deployed including one HF, two slow motions, several paw cameras as well as a crane.
In addition, over 150 meters of cable was installed and two EVS XT3 channel max systems were used for slow motion and highlights, as well as lots of coffee.
English and French commentators were each present at their posts, to comment on the action using their respective methods.

I joined Gravity Media in March 2021, and so far it has been non-stop. I’ve worked on the Welsh Elections, the Europa League Final and the six weeks of the Euros, as well as the UEFA Super Cup and the 2021 UEFA Nations League Finals. Gravity Media is one of the few companies that pioneers the use of IP, which is what excited me about joining the company, and thanks to my previous experience ‒ working on the integration and build of the UK’s first IP trucks ‒ I’m allocated to many of the IP and SDI-based projects.
Every single job I’ve done, right down to the cards in the glue frames, has been completely different. A bespoke system rolls out of the door every single time. Each project begins with the client brief, and from that I will establish what needs to be delivered: which formats we’ll use, the type of conversion necessary, how to integrate audio into that. Then the system needs to be decided on, and the project engineer, head of engineering and director of services will discuss the client’s requirements to agree on the appropriate kit. Assembling the kit takes time. If a job is big, the number of individual pieces of kit required runs into the thousands. For the Super Cup, the kit alone totalled 1,300 items transported to site in a 40ft articulated lorry ‒ and that was just a medium-sized project; a single football match.
The next step is to build the system, which involves lots of screen time creating rack layouts, paperwork, the cable schedules and kit lists. I will work with both the Asset and Warehouse teams and, once everything required is booked out, then it’s time to build the test rig. For the Super Cup Technical Operations Centre (TOC), I looked after the technical workbook, which we used to build all the systems and make sure the rigs were assembled and tested before shipping. Time-wise, normally you get a couple of weeks to prepare for a TOC.
All the rigs travel pre-built, so everything goes out as it is ‒ the router rack, the sound rack with Codecs and Lawo core ‒ it is all rigged and tested and travels in a flight case with that rack. For the Super Cup, it was a five-day rig; the kit landed in Belfast on match day minus eight, and I had to be ready to hand over by lunchtime on match day minus two. But that wasn’t the end of my duties. The role of Project Engineer has three elements: rigging engineer, support engineer, and team manager. It’s at handover point that my role moves from rigging engineer to onsite support and team manager. I have to handle the distribution of feeds to the unilateral broadcast partners (UBPs) and all the feeds to QC, which is continuous. If anything breaks or there are any faults, it is down to me to find it and fix it if it originated with us. In addition to this, I am running the onsite crew; I must look after them, keep everyone fed, watered and happy, and make sure their travel arrangements are sorted ‒ all the personnel aspects. Most of it is routine, and the only crisis management I’ve had to do so far was COVID-19-related ‒ test results did not return, so retesting needed to be done, which meant flights back home were delayed.
When a project involves flypacks, you know the job is going to be a minimum of about two weeks, and can be anything up to eight. We fit our downtime around that. We’re incredibly busy at the moment, so it’s more on than off, but we’re all just pleased the business is doing so well. It is always full-on during a project, but that’s what I thrive on and, onsite, team spirit is what keeps everyone going. We provide each other with a support network onsite, which keeps morale buoyant – and delivering an outstanding result for the client is an incredible feeling. Over the six weeks we did on the Euros – across the 11 UEFA TOCs, BBC Sport and the ESPN output – Gravity Media had 100% clean to air ‒ you can’t top that!
It’s exciting to be working on such high-profile events – particularly the Euros, which had such an incredible, positive impact on the country for a few weeks. You’re working of course, so you can’t fully get into in like the fans at home, but for the Euros, I was working in the International Broadcast Centre (IBC), doing the remote operation for ESPN. We were sited quite close to two British areas, with a Spanish broadcasting team just down from us and an Italian one across the other side. Even though I was quite remote from the action, it was easy to tell how the game was going from which group was screaming when their team scored a goal.
My first six months have been a bit of a whirlwind, but I’ve been loving what I’m doing. Moving forward, I’d like to continue running projects and designing systems, and whatever happens, I want to remain on a technical, practical project management route. One of the things I like about working here is that there is no chance of losing touch with engineering even when moving into a managerial role. As a vision engineer and EIC (engineer in charge), I’m always heavily involved in the engineering side of things. We have other great people dedicated to production account management and technical project management; it’s brilliant to have so much resource at our disposal, which is ultimately there for the benefit of our clients.

In October 2020, Gravity Media partnered with Telstra to deliver the seventh annual Telstra Vantage event, a celebration of world-class ideas, technology, and business solutions.
Until 2020, Telstra Vantage had been a physical event where Telstra’s enterprise customers gathered to learn about new ways to solve their business problems. However, with the introduction of COVID-19, Telstra had to reimagine the event to engage with their audience in a completely different format.
The result was Telstra Vantage Remixed.
As Telstra’s production partner – Gravity Media was excited to bring Telstra’s vision to life. Working alongside creative agency Imagination, Gravity Media delivered 40 hours of live broadcast across three livestreamed channels. The result was 38 sessions, panel discussions and keynote presentations from Telstra, their partners and special guests live, online and on demand, exclusively for Telstra’s enterprise customers.
Gravity Media delivered a start to finish solution, bringing together a range of different signals from all around the world and integrating them into three control rooms.
“Gravity Media and Imagination go back over 10 years… so we knew that we could trust them for really complex projects with lots of moving parts, so they were an obvious choice when it came to Telstra Vantage Remixed.” – Heath Campanaro, Director, Imagination
The event was live across two days on Wednesday 21 and Thursday 22 October. Two of the channels were produced from Telstra’s Sydney Customer Insight Centre, while the third channel was broadcast from Gravity Media’s studio at its Production Centre in Sydney.
At each location Gravity Media provided full production crew along with broadcast and camera gear, including a turnkey flyaway kit on location at Telstra.

In March, Gravity Media were engaged by Turningpoint Solutions the broadcast producer of the Australian Labor Party’s 2021 Special Platform Conference. Gravity Media facilitated the event with a turnkey fly away solution on location.
The Australian Labor Party’s 2021 Special Platform Conference was Australia’s first truly national and local party conference, with live links across the country, live online voting and the introduction of evening sessions packed with a rich combination of real stories, passionate speeches, and great entertainment.
Gone were the fixed platforms and dusty rooms. On came an energetic and modern format that combined real democracy with genuine local engagement. It allowed a real and immediate connection between political leaders, activists and the general public linked with the theme “On your side”.
Highlights included a barnstorming speech from Anthony Albanese as well as live dance from the NT dance company, music from Jimmy Barnes and up and coming singer Gordi, all hosted by TV presenter Samantha Lane. The conference linked to UK Labour leader Keir Starmer and to former ALP leaders with a strong message of solidarity.
It was the first time an event of this kind has been held in Australia and in its’ use of tech and interactivity was the first of its kind in the world.
The event was driven by the Australian Labor Party’s National Secretary, Paul Erickson, and his team in the ALP National Secretariat. They brought in Peter Pecotić from Turning Point Solutions and Mark Lucas and Dom Minghella from London based campaigners Lucas/Minghella to build the format and deliver the event.
This bold approach produced results, reaching more than two hundred thousand people, and attracted huge social media interaction, with impressions across Twitter, Instagram and TikTok numbering in the millions.
– Increase in Australian Labor’s reach on Facebook: 60%.
– Live tweeting impressions: 1.5 million compared to 100k the previous week.
– Instagram likes: up 300% compared with the last conference.
– Number of people experiencing the conference as a first-hand event: 200,000 – 100 times the attendance of the last conference.
Paul Erickson said “Labor has held more than 60 National Conferences over our 130 year history, but none of them have been anything like this. Our Online Special Platform Conference demonstrated how Labor is ready to change and adapt for a new era, while maintaining our passionately held values. Labor has a mission to be on the side of every Australian and to offer them a better future, and this unique event allowed us to engage people in every state and territory in a conversation about what sort of country we want Australia to be after COVID. The Conference showed that we are a forward-looking party with a renewed energy and determination.”
A short film of the making of the event can be seen here: https://vimeo.com/542325608
Peter Pecotic said “It’s such an honour to develop and deliver such a ground-breaking event. I’ve always believed that we must constantly innovate and try new things. This was the perfect opportunity to take Labor values, which I believe in deeply, and project them in a new format. I look forward to developing this new approach even further with other unions and progressive parties around the world”
Mark Lucas said “We are proud to be part of something truly new and innovative. Future elections will be won by parties who are prepared to genuinely and honestly engage with the electorate and the ALP is doing just that”
Peter had previously worked on successful online events for the NSW Party and for the Eden Monaro By election along with political and corporate campaigns over the last 20 years. Mark Luas has worked on over 20 national election campaigns around the word including 3 successive wins for Tony Blair, and Dom Minghella has written for major TV programmes as well as political campaigns.
Peter brought in leading TV Director Todd Decker who had the task of linking the speeches, contributions from local members, international links, music and performances into one seamless show. In turn they brought in Gravity media who were given the task of live linking to 150 delegates in every corner of the country. Pecotić, on reccomendation from industry colleague Gane Djukić, brought in Lumi Global to manage the live real time voting system.
Campaign Edge, led by Dee Madigan produced a series of compelling videos that took the event to a new level.
Labor Party CTO Dennis Perry and Kim Richardson of Viewdale IT ensured the IT platforms were well integrated and secure. They developed a user experience that had the least tech savvy delegate able to easily and securely register, speak to conference, access all relevant information and vote. Perry also ensured complimenting the venue IT infrastructure to handle the amount of data traffic necessary to achieve this online conference.

Ed Tischler, our Managing Director in EMEA, caught up with Videstream to discuss how everything has been at Gravity Media over the past year, the important topic of remote production and how’s 2021 shaping up for Gravity Media.
Gravity Media has been very fortunate given the circumstances. We’ve got a very diverse range of media services and facilities, whether that’s production teams or production centres, fly-pack solutions or System Integration services; we’ve been able to bring that all together and help clients solve mission critical problems.
But of course, some things have moved more remotely; ITV, for example, we put their Roland-Garros production at The Production Centre in London, whereas normally we’d go on site. For ITV’s I’m a Celebrity, we helped ITV take that from the jungle and put it on in the castle in Wales, and help move their post-production workflow to a remote format.
2021 holds a lot of great potential with the Euros and Olympics still scheduled for the summer. But of course we’re continuing to work with our clients to offer options and plan for different scenarios. From either full on-site venue based productions, all the way to back-ending it from our studios or even moving the venue for some productions. The most important thing for our clients right now is flexibility and options and that’s what we’re continuing to deliver.
