Over the past four years, Gravity Media has been facilitating Main Event boxing matches for Fox Sports in Australia with two different levels of support.
The events mainly take place in eastern states of Australia from Townsville in Queensland down through to Newcastle and Sydney in New South Wales, and to Melbourne in Victoria – even starting to go regional with Bendigo hosting an event in 2019.
The smaller fight card events mainly display up and coming talent and broadcast solely on Fox Sports. For these events where traditionally six cameras are used, Gravity Media provides the RoVa outside broadcast trucks. RoVa’s were designed, built and integrated to the highest standards and these trucks bring operational and technical advantages to productions, in a comfortable working environment.
Pre-COVID-19, the smallest boxing event Gravity Media has facilitated was held in St Kilda Town Hall in Melbourne where 200 people attended.
On the big-name exclusive events where potential “Title” holders and/or celebrities fight, Gravity Media provides one of our double expanding outside broadcast trucks – including HD 1, HD 6, or HD 8. These bouts utilise between ten to fourteen cameras and are broadcast on Foxtel’s Main Event pay per view channel.
The biggest boxing event in Australia so far was the Manny Pacquiao vs. Jeff Horn which took place at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, Australia in July 2017. Thousands of fans gathered to watch the sold-out fight at the stadium which saw Jeff Horn win the fight by unanimous decision and claim his first world title in boxing. Gravity Media facilitated this international event.

Will Wright, our Head of Production & Executive Producer of Gravity Media in the USA, caught up with SVG to discuss Gravity Media’s jam packed week filled with 47 events. It was all hands-on deck for the Gravity Media team in the USA with every US mobile unit out on site and all team members deployed!
The week ended with the production of BKFC’s Knucklemania on the evening of Friday 5 February in Lakeland Florida. Gravity Media’s Director of Engineering, Tyler Thomas was onsite in Lakeland with our 4K mobile unit Columbus which was at the center of the production as the team packaged the event.
“As a company, we are known for facilities,” says Will Wright, who is responsible for the Knucklemania event explained. “We are able to still provide that with great high-end facilities and high-end cameras like the Sony HDC-4300, but now we are a packager as well. This is the third PPV we have done with BKFC and the biggest event that they’ve done.”
As the packager for the show, the Gravity Media team had a lot of control over the production elements with 45 people working on the show, five working from home and 10 in Los Angeles, where remote graphics, highlight editing, streaming/and social integration, and Spanish-language commentary are handled. Our Director of Technology, Alex Rybalko was responsible for overseeing the operations along with Danita Davies, Manager of Remote Production at our Los Angeles base.

It’s the fight everyone’s been talking about, and it’s the fight brought to BT Sport by Gravity Media’s mobile production unit, Columbus.
Over the weekend of 22 to 23 February, Columbus and its operational B-Unit were deployed to Las Vegas’s iconic MGM Grand venue for one of the most eagerly anticipated rematches in living memory. And the fight lived up to the hype, with the Gypsy King (Fury) delivering a boxing masterclass to defeat his US opponent with a seventh-round TKO. The previously undefeated Wilder had been floored twice before his corner threw in the towel.
The two Gravity Media mobile units joined three additional OB trucks and six SNG vehicles within the TV compound at MGM Grand, showing the scale of the intense media interest. They were used to produce BT Sport’s onsite presentation studio, as well as coverage from ringside. In addition, Gravity Media also supplied commentary and comms solutions to the UK rights holder.
The flexibility offered by Columbus – a 60ft single-expanding unit that carries and deploys UK-friendly production solutions – was one of the key attractions for BT Sport when it came to selecting its facilities partner for this project. Tools such as Glensound commentary equipment and Coles lip mics, combined with an engineering team that’s experienced in UK production workflows, make Gravity Media an ideal choice for British broadcasters operating within North America.
Gravity Media, the leading global provider of complex live broadcast facilities and production services to content owners, creators and distributors, has provided BT Sport’s exclusive PPV coverage of the Deontay Wilder vs Tyson Fury 2 heavyweight title fight. Columbus, Gravity Media’s Los Angeles-based 4K multi-purpose mobile unit, was deployed at Las Vegas’ iconic MGM Grand venue alongside its operational B Unit for the rematch on February 22, which was expected to become the biggest fight this year. This follows the split-decision draw between the Gypsy King (Fury) and Bronze Bomber (Wilder) in December 2018.

Gravity understood BT Sport’s requirements from the outset as the team clearly understood the UK technical language that was being used by BT Sport’s engineers and operations team.
Marc Genin, Gravity Media’s Executive Vice President, added: “Although Columbus was built to serve the North American production market, it can be reconfigured with elements that are preferred in British productions. This means that we can meet the specific requirements of UK content creators such as BT Sport which are covering major events over here without having to compromise on ambition or quality to achieve a familiar feel.”
Columbus is the flagship of Gravity Media’s North American fleet and was the first mobile unit to feature a full 4K monitor wall, one-button hydraulic deployment and integrated RF. It has been used for a range of high-end 4K HDR and UHD sports and entertainment productions in the US.
