PRESS COVERAGE

With the Kings League Italy gearing up for the start of its 2025/26 season later this month, significant updates have been announced.

The new league season follows the successful Kings World Cup Nations 2025, which combined 7-a-side football and entertainment, welcoming 16 national teams made up of former footballers, influencers and content creators.

The Kings World Cup Nations, held from 1-12 January 2025 in Milan and Turin, recorded an audience of 100 million viewers and 1.5 billion social impressions, with live coverage on Twitch, YouTube, TikTok and traditional broadcasters in more than 60 countries.

The rules of the format included 40-minute matches, unlimited substitutions, special weapons and more, with teams led by streamers and influencers.

Gravity Media Italy managed the broadcast production, stage set-up, lighting, LED walls, audio and filming with innovative cameras, drones and augmented reality, creating an immersive experience both in the arena and for viewers at home.

“After the experience at the Peppino Vismara Sports Centre in Milan, production is now moving from this ‘sports citadel’ to Cologno Monzese, on land adjacent to our headquarters, where one of the most renowned television production centres in Italy is already operating,” said Claudio Cavallotti, managing director of Gravity Media Italy.

“We are pleased to further strengthen the partnership with Kings League Lottomatica.sport Italy, with the goal of building a new arena that will soon host event productions, replicating the model adopted in the previous edition.”

The technological setup remains the same; the main change comes in the area of logistics. While in Milan the control rooms were housed in external containers, in Cologno Monzese the audio and video control rooms and support areas are integrated within the production centre building, improving organisation and operational efficiency.

The Kings League action will take place in the Fonzies Arena, a tent structure that will cover 5,000sqm, with a well-maintained pitch and high borders. Stands will be able to accommodate around 500 spectators for a close and engaging experience.

The filming layout remains the same, with broadcast cameras, auxiliary units, goal-line microcameras, drones and augmented reality.

The dynamic lighting system and large LED panels will display replays, customised graphics, scores and interactive content in real time, while the entire production will continue in HD 1080p.

Franco Morelli, managing director of Kings League Lottomatica.sport, stated: “We are pleased to relocate the headquarters of Kings League Lottomatica.sport Italy next to the new Fonzies Arena in Cologno Monzese, a true media hub in the Milan area. We would like to thank the mayor and the municipal council, as well as Gravity Media Italy, a partner with whom we are glad to continue our journey together.”

Gravity Media Italy continues to serve as the official service provider for broadcast and logistics activities of Kings League Italy.

The timeline sets full operational readiness of all facilities by 6 October, with the transfer of technical structures starting on 10 September, confirming the commitment of Gravity Media Italy’s team to ensuring continuity and quality in the production of a format now followed worldwide.

Realisatie in recordtempo

The Kings World Cup Nations is a 7-a-side football tournament that combines competitive excitement with spectacle, featuring prominent participants, including former football stars, influencers, and content creators. The event involves 16 national teams and is governed by unique rules derived from the original Kings League format.

The inaugural edition, and the first Kings League competition held in Italy, began on 1 January 2025 at the Kings League Arena in Via dei Missaglia, Milan. Italy made its debut against Japan in the opening match. The tournament continued until the final on 12 January at the Allianz Stadium in Turin, where the first Kings World Cup Nations trophy was awarded.

Anticipation is now building for the Italian Kings League championship, set to start on 3 February. Created two years ago by former footballer Gerard Piqué, the format primarily targets younger audiences, blending entertainment with sports competition. The KWCN achieved a record audience of 100 million viewers and 1.5 billion social media impressions.

Matches were streamed on platforms such as Twitch, YouTube, Kick, TikTok, and Facebook, and broadcast by traditional networks in over 60 countries. In Italy, they aired live on Sky Sport channels, including Sky Sport Max and TV8.

Unique Gameplay Features

The tournament’s rules are particularly innovative, with 40-minute matches, shootouts to resolve ties, “presidential” penalties, and special cards affecting gameplay, such as double-goal cards and temporary dismissals.

On the pitch, professional football veterans alternated with amateur players, while teams and national squads were led by influencers and streamers acting as team presidents.

EMG / Gravity Media Italy’s Role

EMG Italy, part of the EMG / Gravity Media group, provided all broadcast services for the Kings League Italy and the Kings World Cup Nations. This included live coverage and streaming distribution for the final at the Allianz Stadium and the upcoming Italian championship. A team of around 40 professionals managed all technical aspects, such as lighting and LED wall setups, to deliver an immersive experience for both in-person and remote audiences.

The visual design of the format stands out for its modern and engaging approach, elevating the event beyond traditional sports. The Kings League Arena was transformed into a “football theatre,” featuring meticulously crafted scenic setups.

The Kings League Arena

A dynamic lighting and LED wall system was used to create a vibrant, modern atmosphere. Lighting effects highlighted key moments like team entrances and goal celebrations, as well as sponsor messages. Large LED panels surrounded the pitch, displaying customised graphics, replays, exclusive content, scores, standings, and real-time interactive visuals, contributing to an immersive narrative.

The Kings League structure spans 6,000 sqm, featuring a detailed pitch surrounded by high borders, creating an “arena” effect reminiscent of American sports events. This setup also catered to online audiences, with innovative camera angles, a drone for aerial shots, and augmented reality enhancements during broadcasts. The stands accommodate approximately 400 spectators, offering an intimate and immersive experience for on-site audiences.

Interactive and Technological Experience

Francesco Donato, CTO of EMG Italy, explained: “We handled the technical setup and production, implementing about 200 sqm of scenic LED wall systems. The LED walls, controlled by a complex watch-out system, were used around the pitch perimeter, in the primary camera-facing area, and behind the goals to display sponsor content, scores, and additional show features. We also installed field lighting, delivering 1,200 lux uniformly distributed with LED technology, and several moving heads critical to the event’s visual success. The indoor audio system was separately managed for field coverage and audience diffusion, distinct from the broadcast system.”

Presidents and Social Streaming

Each team was represented by a president, a content creator with an established fanbase who streamed live commentary from pitch-side setups. EMG Italy equipped the main control room for managing audio, video, lighting, and LED walls in dedicated shelters outside the arena. Around 20 cameras were deployed for live production, providing feeds for presidents/streamers and international broadcasts in English, Italian, and Spanish. Two additional control rooms supported Italian and Spanish integration, with pre- and post-match commentary studios. Feeds were distributed to around 60 international takers via SRT streams.

Donato added: “The small pitch size significantly influenced the dynamics of camera placement, given the faster pace compared to traditional football. Besides broadcast-quality pitch cameras, we used micro-cameras behind goals, PTZ units, and a lightweight drone to achieve high-quality and dynamic images.”

Control Room, VAR, Team, and Setup

The permanent control room, also used for the regular season, coordinated a complex mix of entertainment and sports production. It featured camera, lighting, and LED wall control stations, a powerful mixer with three effect desks, four graphic stations, two super motion replay desks, and two dedicated VAR desks.

The production team expanded to over 40 professionals, including new roles for field activities such as Watch Out operators, lighting technicians, and a sound designer for arena and broadcast audio management. Dedicated microphone operators supported the presidents’ stations, while two mini-studios for Italian and Spanish unilateral feeds hosted pre- and post-match commentary.

Francesco Donato’s Final Comment

“We’re witnessing a significant shift in audiences and content distribution methods, making events accessible on the move and across a variety of devices, beyond traditional TV screens. The sold-out final on 12 January at Allianz Stadium embodied this new global entertainment model, featuring not only the Colombia vs Brazil match but also a Mahmood concert and a Legends vs Streamers special match to enhance the overall show experience. It’s fascinating to see how such an event has engaged a broader audience, attracting young people and families—a different demographic from traditional football stadiums.”

Boost Graphics, the specialist international graphics and virtual production subsidiary of EMG / Gravity Media, the leading force in production and content & media services and facilities, is proud to announce the successful delivery of immersive virtual experience  for a major English football league.

Utilising a powerful combination of industry-leading software and gaming technology, Boost Graphics has crafted immersive, real-time visuals that elevate the viewer experience for one of the most-watched football leagues in the world.

The Boost Graphics team employed a sophisticated blend of tools and innovative use of advanced software including Unreal Engine, Cesium, Google Maps, MapBox, Cinema 4D, After Effects, and Premiere, to create dynamic and visually engaging content.

This seamless integration of multiple platforms allowed for a fast turn over and high-quality visual output, setting a new standard in sports broadcasting.

One of the unique standout features of this project was the creation of detailed nighttime maps. These maps required the meticulous manual placement of stadium lights, leveraging image references of both the stadiums and surrounding streets to ensure a highly realistic representation. The inclusion of streetlights across various cities, along with the accurate depiction of seas and rivers, was achieved through advanced MapBox data integration and the creative use of custom shaders.

These enhanced graphics provide significant benefits for broadcasters, rightsholders, football teams, venues, and viewers alike. All now experience a clearer sense of the geographic layout of different stadiums and their relative distances – some of which are much closer than many people realise. The new visuals immerse viewers, allowing them to gain a deeper understanding of the locations, bringing them closer to the action.

Expanding EMG / Gravity Media’s footprint facilitating coverage of the top tier English league, this marks Boost Graphic’s second year providing graphics. During 2023, the specialist team produced 12 animations showcasing what could be achieve. This year, they significantly expanded the project, creating 80 new variants to elevate the viewing experience.

Whilst these services are currently being used exclusively for the Premier League, Boost Graphics is actively exploring opportunities to expand its offerings to other sports leagues and regions in the near future, which can also bring additional commercial opportunities for the rightsholder by displaying ads or promoting brand identities.

Frank Temmerman, Manager at Boost based in Belgium commented:

“Our team had a great time working closely with our client and diving into the world of English football. After this project, we now know our way around the UK better than ever. It’s been an exciting journey to bring these iconic stadiums and cities to life in a way that adds value to both broadcasters and fans.”

As Boost Graphics continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible in digital media, the team remains committed to delivering unparalleled experiences through technology, design, and innovation. This project serves as a powerful testament to what can be accomplished now that the EMG and Gravity Media have combined forces, showcasing the enhanced capabilities and innovative potential of our unified teams.

Eamonn Curtin, Interim CCO EMG / Gravity Media:

realiseren.”

For UEFA, EMG / Gravity Media leveraged extensive experience from years of EURO coverage to deliver the Technical Operations Centres (TOCs) and the FanTV solution at each of the ten venues across Germany. In collaboration with the team in Italy, the group’s French staff also provided the giant LED screens for the matches in Munich and Stuttgart on behalf of UEFA.

EMG / Gravity Media not only supplied the technical equipment for the giant LED screens in the stadiums before, during, and after the matches but also provided four OB vans and wireless equipment (host steadicam and RF handheld camera) for the ten games at the Cologne stadium and Düsseldorf arena.

The group also delivered 1080p HDR live aerial broadcasts for all matches, from the opening to the final in Berlin, through the specialized wireless and camera divisions of the group, EMG Connectivity, and ACS. The six helicopters, all equipped with the latest UHD HDR stabilized camera gimbals, were sourced regionally to minimize flight time and aligned with the EMG / Gravity Media sustainability initiative to reduce flight hours required for tournament coverage.

The same care and commitment to sustainability were evident in the extensive collaboration with the British broadcaster ITV, which was able to reduce its workforce for covering this major tournament from 300–400 to just 90 employees.

The workflow for the 1080p50 production was designed around a “remote-inverse” model, with a remotely controlled production control room and a mini MCR in Berlin, alongside a studio and commentary positions. Both presentation areas were equipped with nine cameras each, while on-site staff included a vision mixer, director, sound system, producer, autocue operator, and a small technical and lighting team. Crucially, most of the equipment—including EVS replay, audio, and graphics—was based in London, with the sites connected via low-latency 10Gb links.

This allowed ITV to maintain a 30:70 staff split between Berlin and the UK, saving costs and reducing environmental impact from cross-border transport of personnel and equipment. In line with sustainability efforts, EMG / Gravity Media also provided ITV with new trucks for feed to production sites. These are equipped with solar-powered battery backups enabling overnight connection maintenance while minimizing power consumption.

Meanwhile, the EMG / Gravity Media team from the Netherlands successfully supported the Dutch national football team for the public broadcaster Nederlandse Omroep Stichting (NOS) from the start of the tournament through to the semifinals. The fifteen-member team accompanied the squad from stadium to stadium with a six-camera OB van—three cameras for the studio and three for analysis footage.

Finally, the Australian team provided technical support for coverage of the UEFA European Championship for Optus Sport. The group had a full team of production staff, cameras, and technical and engineering support to deliver worldwide broadcasts, including live feeds to Germany and local communities. All this took place alongside pre-match hosting and broadcasts of the CONMEBOL 2024 Copa America tournament, also for Optus Sport channels.

Eamonn Curtin, Interim Chief Commercial Officer at EMG / Gravity Media, commented:

“After a successful European Football Championship, we are proud to announce that this event ranks among the largest live broadcasts we have undertaken since the merger of our two companies. The collaboration of our employees from various countries and backgrounds embodies the purpose of our merger: to harness our collective expertise and experience. Together, we created innovative and sustainable workflows to support UEFA and partners like ITV and Optus, ensuring their viewers receive the best possible Euro experience.”

With the UEFA EURO 2024 football championship just completed, EMG / Gravity Media, working on behalf of UEFA, is highlighting the advanced broadcast infrastructure the combined group put together on a global level, both for UEFA and for a number of international broadcasters including UK commercial broadcaster ITV, Dutch public broadcaster NOS and Australia’s Optus Sport.

For UEFA, EMG / Gravity Media leveraged its extensive experience gained from years of working at the EUROs to deliver the Technical Operations Centres (TOCs) and FANTV solution at each of the ten venues across Germany. In collaboration with the team in Italy, whilst the Group’s French crew members on-site delivered the big screens action for the fixtures held in two both Münich and Stuttgart on behalf of UEFA.

Besides delivering the technical assets for the giant screen experience in the stadiums before, during and after the matches, EMG / Gravity Media also provided four OB trucks and RF equipment (host Steadicam and handheld RF camera coverage) for the ten matches held at the Cologne Stadium and Düsseldorf Arena.

The Group also provided live helicopter 1080p HDR aerial coverage for all matches, from the opening to the Final in Berlin through the Group’s specialist RF and camera divisions, EMG Connectivity and ACS. The six helicopters, all fitted with the latest UHD HDR stabilised camera gimbals, were regionally sourced keeping flying time to a minimum and followed EMG / Gravity Media’s carbon offsetting initiative for helicopter filming on the flying hours required to deliver the tournament’s coverage plan.

The same care and commitment to sustainability was also evident in its extensive work with the UK’s ITV, which has helped the broadcaster to drop headcount for covering a major tournament from 300-400 down to just 90.

The workflow for the 1080p50 production was designed around a ‘reverse remote’ production model, with a remote gallery and mini MCR set up in Berlin along with a studio and commentary positions. The two presentation areas were fitted out with nine cameras between them, while on-site is a vision mixer, director, PA, producer, autocue op, and a small tech and lighting team. Crucially, most of the kit underpinning this set up, including EVS replay, sound, and graphics, was all based back in London, with the locations linked together by low latency 10Gb diverse paths.

This allowed ITV to maintain a 30/70 split in personnel between the two locations, Berlin, and the UK, saving costs and the environmental impact of moving crew and kit across borders. Continuing the sustainability theme, EMG / Gravity Media also provided new trucks to ITV for venue injects. These feature solar power battery backup, allowing them to sustain connectivity overnight while minimising the amount of power used.

Meanwhile, the EMG / Gravity Media team from the Netherlands has been successfully following the Dutch football team for the public broadcaster Nederlandse Omroep Stichting (NOS) coverage, from the start of the tournament to the semi-finals. This crew of fifteen members are covering the team from stadium to stadium with an OB truck carrying six cameras, three for the studio and three for the analysis shots.

Finally, the team based in Australia provided technical support and operation for the coverage of the UEFA Euros at Optus Sport. The group had a full crew of production, cameras, technical and engineering support to integrate world feeds with live crosses to Germany and local communities. All of this while providing pre-match hosting and a cross into the CONMEBOL 2024 COPA America tournament also for the Optus Sport channels.

Eamonn Curtin, Interim Chief Commercial Officer at EMG / Gravity Media says:

“Following a successful EUROs, we are proud to announce that this event ranks among the largest live broadcasts we have managed since the merger of our two companies. The collaboration of our diverse employees from various backgrounds and countries epitomises the purpose of our union; to leverage our collective expertise and experiences. Together, we have created innovative and sustainable workflows to support UEFA and partners like ITV and Optus, ensuring the best possible Euros experience for their audiences.”
